I’m not really into sports. I’ll watch boxing and mixed martial-arts (and some Olympic events) but other than that, I don’t pay much attention. I might get swept up in the moment of some championship that everyone’s watching but I couldn’t name you teams and players, stats and stuff like that.
All that being said, there has been a lot of talk in the news lately about this Tim Tebow guy and how he’s always taking time out to give God the praise.
I may not be an avid sports fan but I remember growing up seeing various athletes in numerous sports, taking time out after a particular play or score-to give thanks to God. You would think that the guy was hauling people down to the river and forcing them to be baptized the way people are carrying on about it. I can see it now:
The wind danced ever so softly over the top of the water as the old time choir hums in reverent tones to the pastors words, right before dunking their heads in the water. The congregation erupts with shouts of “PRAISE JESUS!” as they welcome their new brother into the loving arms of Christ; and it’s all because of Tim Tebow.
And that was the half-time show, wait until after the game!
As far as I can tell he hasn’t done anything wrong (unless winning football games is now a crime.) It could be just a case of haters hating; not wanting to see him and his team shine. Besides, it would seem to me that professional organized sports could use a few good role models.
You had the guy last year or the year before (Vick I think was his name) that killed dogs as well as kept them for fighting. How come whenever he comes out to play the announcers and fans don’t say anything about that? Why don’t they say something “cute and clever” about that?
“And there goes convicted dog killer and illegal dog fighter, Mike Vick!” This would then be followed by a Tebowing movement of its own. But instead of praying, they all bark like dogs in pain because that’s what Vick did wasn’t it?
I could go on and on for hours listing examples of horrible behaviors exhibited by other NFL players. Any search you even half heartedly try will produce a horn of plenty. Loads of examples to choose from spanning a wide range of pro sports.
I don’t know about Tebow’s personal life and willing to bet most people don’t. If the guy is doing something positive I say leave him be. It’s much better having fans look up to someone like him than not having anyone to look up to at all.
But I’m not surprised. The war we fight is a spiritual one, not to be confused with issues of the flesh-this is expected. But we’ll save that topic for another day.
