The devil that you know vs. the one that you don’t

Something big is coming.

It’s really hard to stay neutral when you’re talking about politics, but I would hope that the honest person would at some point say to themselves that right and wrong should not be based on what political ideology you choose to claim as your own, but because it’s the right thing to do.

I am fully aware that as a modern American politician, you have to be prepared to do or say just about anything to not only get in office, but, to stay there as well. If that isn’t the case, then I am all ears as to hearing another reason for why we get the people we do. I hope that I don’t have to point out the obvious in saying that not all politicians are like this, but there are enough of them to where it has obviously become a danger to the country.

President Obama crossed a line during a recent press conference when he brought his daughters into a political argument (one that on it’s face is hypocrisy at its finest) for the simple and obvious purpose of scoring points and throwing red meat to millions of his adoring fans. Mark Levin goes over this perfectly in the first 10 or so minutes of his March 6th pod cast.

I find it cowardly to use your daughters claiming that you’re offended for their sake when it comes to the whole Limbaugh/Fluke fiasco, yet when questioned about liberal commentators and comedians who have said way more vile and hateful things about conservative women, he completely dismissed the question, gave a circular non-answer and promptly went to someone a bit more friendly to his cause. That to me is not a sign of leadership or personal convictions. If you are going to be outraged, then be outraged. This goes for all of those protesting Rush’s sponsors and so called feminists as well. How can you denounce one and not the other? This isn’t about sticking up for Rush: I don’t listen to him because he’s a too incendiary for my, this is about character and principles. If you stand for something than stand for it. You can not be divided in your core beliefs in such a manner. If you’re truly that upset and you want to make an example out of people then do it the right way and call all of those out who say such hideous things about women, children and their families.

Like I said previously, almost all of them do it; that is to say they will do anything for a vote  but this was so brazen, so obvious that it’s insulting. He’s not even trying to hide it anymore. Anyone with any level of common sense and critical thinking can see it. When you put it like that it’s like he’s saying “Yeah I know it’s wrong but you’re either too stupid to notice or I’ve got your vote no matter what.” The president didn’t get my vote the first time around and using your kids to get at your opponents pretty much guarantees a repeat performance from me.  Kids are a no go for me and if you’re willing to use your kids to get ahead then I can’t support you.

There are plenty of other reasons not to give President Obama my vote but this was the one that did it for me. That and Holder’s comments recently. There has been a slow and steady march towards a very different America a very different world (and not in a good way) than I grew up in or imagined for my families future. I’ve been talking about this stuff for the last 20 years but lately it’s really started to pick up. I don’t think that is by coincidence; I don’t believe in that, everything has a reason. I’m not worried though and oddly enough even though times are tuff and things are ugly and getting more gruesome by the hour it seems, I’ve never been at such peace. That’s the work of the Holy Spirit. If not, I’d be running around spending 10’s of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars buying a whole bunch of stuff in some vain attempt to fight off the world to the last can of beans and rusted ammunition. Don’t get me wrong: always have a plan a, b and c but worrying to that degree for the inevitable isn’t my cup of tea. Either way it goes down, it’s in God’s hands. And for those of you not sold on that just realize that you are not big enough to fight it on your own. A very clear choice will have to be made soon by all of us.

I think someone is coming soon and the stage is being set. We’re watching prophecy reveal itself right before our eyes. We don’t know when or anything like that. I’m not joining any groups or organizations that are doing any type of preparations but all you have to do is put two and two together and you know that something is going on. It has been for awhile but the pace of change and the scale of it suggests something far more sinister. You don’t have to believe in prophecy to see the changes in the wind. But just because you don’t believe it doesn’t mean that it’s just going to go away.

I admit that I had been seriously struggling with choosing who I was going to vote for this coming election. The Republican candidates just aren’t doing anything for me. They all have bits and pieces about them that I do and don’t like–even the President has some things I agree with–but there isn’t that one that I could wholeheartedly jump all in for yet. I know that there is no such thing as the perfect candidate, that you have to settle for the best that you can get at the time. And that is true, you’ll never have someone that you will see eye to eye on everything with. But these candidates are just bad; I don’t really feel comfortable with any of them behind the wheel. Out of them all I like Newt the most. This puts me in a tight situation. I either vote for the devil that I know or the one that I don’t. Of course that isn’t a literal meaning, but you get the general idea, at least I hope you do. If not you need to spend more time talking to people outside of your own peanut gallery.

There is option number three, and that’s not vote at all. But even that has it’s drawbacks.

I am a mass consumer of political news media. I read a variety of things from a variety of sources and although I tend to lean more conservative on things, I do my best to stay neutral. I listen to a lot of talk radio of various types and hours worth of pod casts. I’m currently working on my B.A. in journalism because I wanted to learn the skills necessary to vet information and how to acquire and dispense it. I don’t know where that will take me, but it’s my little way of trying to make a difference. But I’m just as disgusted with the Republicans as I am the Democrats. Truth be told, I think George Will was right in his latest column when he suggested that perhaps the republicans should look to focusing their efforts on controlling congress and the senate. I personally don’t see (baring a miracle I.e., Divine Intervention) how whoever they put up to run against the president will succeed. Anything can happen but he’s going to have just as much money as his opposition plus a news media and entertainment sector (which has a strangle hold on the average citizen’s thought process) that is largely backing him to the hilt. There isn’t anything that won’t be said or done this election season and it’s going to take everything in us all to not want to vomit every time we turn on the television or listen to the radio, let alone reading the paper or some biased article. Such discourse only further divides us and as of yet I still know of no stitches large enough to mend the current gaping political wounds that are bleeding us out.

All the pundits, talking heads, 30 second sound clips…every political tool that you can think of, is going to be thrown around and I’m not looking forward to it. But, it’s my fault, I should’ve been doing more than just paying attention to what was going on in the past, I should’ve been doing more about it, at the very least, being more active in local and federal elections. It’s too late to do anything about the past but going forward I hope that we all endeavor to be more active when it comes to selecting people to represent us.

But it’s hard to believe that your vote means anything anymore. It seems that no matter who you vote for, the person running isn’t the person who shows up for work day one. And on that note let me just quickly add that the whole “On day one I’m going to do x, y, z” just stop it. You aren’t going to do anything. I talked about this on my last pod cast. It’s all smoke and mirrors and we know it, or at least some of us do. It’s just as ridiculous as showing up to the Midwest dressed like a cowboy driving a truck; as if people in the Midwest don’t wear suits and ties when they go to work everyday. Who is that for? Are there really that many people out there who would be persuaded to the point of voting for you? If that is indeed the case then we are in much bigger trouble than I thought.

I guess in the end unless something drastic happens, I’ll just have to settle because not voting isn’t an option. That wouldn’t be the right thing for my son to see nor would it be beneficial to my fellow citizen to abandon my civic duty. I can’t say I believe much in the system anymore: there is too much evidence to support my rather negative assessment of our overlords, but I have to at least try. The system isn’t perfect because we aren’t perfect and I’m hoping against hope that if I change my ways, thoughts and habits that somehow, someway it may have sort of “butterfly affect” that works in our favor.

In other words, we need a miracle.

We are headed into a brave new world indeed. Some of the worst things in history have been done with the best of intentions, and though they may whisper sweet nothings into the ears of millions of would be voters, realize and accept that they are doing just that–whispering nothing in your ears. When I say we I mean the same people, our politicians, that tell you that so and so is the devil because he/she has ( R)/ (D) in front of their name. As if their particular side had no part in all of this. I’d sooner believe that Maddoff was alone in his actions than that delusion.

With exceptions standing, I don’t think the America that President Obama wants is the same thing I want. The Republicans aren’t instilling any confidence in me either. We have a long way to go still, an arduous journey fraught with shenanigans the likes of which you’ve never seen nor heard before. I won’t name call and speak ill of people because that’s not right. By and large I think most in public service are simply trying to do what they think is right, even though they are dangerously wrong. I will pray for and support whoever wins the presidency but I hope for my families future sake, your families sake and the worlds sake that whoever it is knows what they’re doing.

I’m not convinced that they do.
