Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind.

I really wanted this game to be good but sadly, I’m disappointed. Sure, it does a great job of bringing you back to early 90’s goofy martial-arts action but as a game it’s lacking.

Don’t get me wrong, I love beat ‘em ups, but this isn’t on the same level as Streets of Rage 4 or Shredder’s Revenge. While it a may dish out the fan service, the gameplay is severely lacking. For starters, there is only one attack button. This makes it easier to pick up and play but makes it too mindless. You can do other attacks with direction/jumping controls, but it just doesn’t feel right. Conversely, all the rangers fight the same. The only thing that’s different between these is a palette swap. I found this very disappointing because I really wanted to feel like a Power Ranger.

Visually the game is alright. The 8-bit graphics are a nice touch. The colors are vibrant and pleasing to the eye. The character animations are okay. Nothing to write home about. When everything is going on it does a very good job of mimicking an episode of the iconic show. The music is alright, classic rangers sounds as well as the sound effects. It’s like it’s been plucked straight from the show.

Nostalgia is not enough for me to recommend this game. Not at its current price. If you must get it, get it on sale. It isn’t very long at all but that’s not the issue. It’s the quality of the game that hurts it. Not because it’s chocked full of bug or doesn’t run right, it’s just…shallow.
